Voskre and her fellow model and model-turned-fashion icon, Lisa Ruggiero, were a staple of the 1990s TV show Pretty in Pink.
But it wasn’t until the 2000s, that the trend started to grow.
According to the Canadian Women’s Health Network, about 25 per cent of women in Canada wear a fitted headscarf at least once a year, according to a 2011 study.
It is estimated that women spend more than $3 billion a year on headscarves, which are often a necessity in a country where there are not enough women of colour in high-end, high-fashion fashion.
A recent study in The New York Times found that, in Canada and around the world, women who wear headscarfs are more likely to be white and middle-class than women who don’t.
